Bilateral Relations

  • The Republic of Costa Rica and the State of Qatar established diplomatic relation in 2004.
  • During the presidential term of H.E. President Oscar Arias (2006-2010), an official delegation headed by President Arias visited Qatar to attend a Financing and Development Conference in 2008. During the visit the delegation promoted foreign investment in Costa Rica.
  • H.H. Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar, visited Costa Rica in January 2010 as the fourth and final stop of an official trip through Latin America. H.H. was the first Arab Head of State to visit the country and recognized Costa Rica as a secure destination that could offer opportunities for investment in areas such as real estate, tourism, and technology.
  • On May 6 2010, the Ambassador of Costa Rica to the State of Qatar, Mr. Javier Escalante Madrigal, presented letters of credence before H.H. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The Embassy became the first Costa Rican Diplomatic Mission in the Arab world.
  • The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship of Costa Rica, Dr. René Castro Salazar, visited Qatar on an official visit on October 19 of 2010. During this visit he met with H.H. Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and other officials of the Qatari Government.
  • The Embassy of the State of Qatar to the Republic of Costa Rica was inaugurated on the 27th of March 2011. H.E. Jaber Ali Al Adba, Ambassador of Qatar to the Republic of Costa Rica, met with the Costa Rican Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. René Castro Salazar, to discuss bilateral relations and to submit the copies of his letters of credence.
  • The President of Costa Rica H.E. Laura Chinchilla Miranda, received the credentials of H.E. Jaber Ali Al Adba as Qatar’s Ambassador to the Republic of Costa Rica in San Jose on April 17 2011.
